Spring is in the Air

February 3rd, 2010 · No Comments

Welcome back!

Seniors, can you feel Spring in the air? Over the last few days I have had the niggling feeling that Spring is in the air. I can feel it! Every year, sometime in February or March, I get the sense that the air around me feels a little different. There is a freshness and newness to the atmosphere. Some people think I am crazy when I feel Spring coming this early, while others nod their head in agreement. They feel it too.

Do you feel Spring coming?

My state of Michigan can be the most beautiful place in the world most anytime of year. Even in the winter, when the land is covered in snow and the sun is shining brightly over the landscape, beauty is all around. Unfortunately, most of the winter our beautiful state can be drab and dreary and cold as all get out.

I can hear you say, but we still have Feburary and March to get through. That is why it is more amazing than ever that some of us physically and emotionally feel the incoming change of seasons. Without looking at the calendar, I know that it is not that many days before the snow melts, the temperature begins to creep up the scale, the long-dormant flowers bravely begin to poke their heads through the frozen crust, and the days become longer in length. By April, around these parts, daffodils and forsythia being to show their beautiful yellow faces.

April showers bring May flowers

In Michigan, that adage is true. We receive plenty of rain during April and May showers us with an abundance of beautiful colorful flowers. It’s still too early to plant flowers – most people wait until the last week or so of May – but the perennials have shown themselves to be a hearty lot. They bless us with a colorful array that helps us quickly forget the shades of white and grey of winter.

No only does the early feel of Spring lift our hearts with joy, but it also reminds us of the holidays we celebrate during these months starting with Valentine’s Day and moving on through Easter towards Memorial Day. By then the hot summer days push all thoughts of the beautiful and welcome Spring out of our minds.

What is your favorite season?

Maybe you can tell, but my favorite season is Spring. A time of renewal and fresh air and beauty that is rare during other seasons – at least in my area. Summer is a close second with it’s green leaves and grass and blue skies and lakes. Fall colors in Michigan are a sight to behold. But, following the cold frozen winters, there is nothing better than the fresh air of Spring. Open the doors, air out the house, wash the car, trade out your clothes for the changing season, and enjoy. I know I will – as soon as Spring arrives.
