Safety Tips For Seniors Who Travel

January 6th, 2012 · 1 Comment

Many seniors who live in the northern climates like to head south for the winter, while others prefer to stay where they are. After the bleakness and gloom of winter the glorious days of summer are very much longed for by most people. It is a time for holiday trips, cook-outs and a whole lot of fun. Most seniors prefer to travel during this time to take advantage of the good weather.

It is a known fact that as we grow older our body begins to slow down and stops functioning as well as it once used to. Health concerns become very real and nothing can be taken for granted in senior years. In fact, many of us are surprised we have even made it to that status.

If you are planning to take a trip any time soon, you will hopefully find these health tips of use.

Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT can be quite deadly. If you are flying then make sure to move around the plane rather than staying seated for the entire journey. Walk up and down the aisle at least once every half hour. You can also do some foot exercises like rotating your feet while sitting in your seat. DVT is the formation of blood clots than can actually become life threatening.

Wine may be the nectar of the gods and they can keep it! Water is the most essential life-giving force there is, and you need to drink lots of it to stay hydrated, especially during the summer. It is also very important to drink plenty of water on airplanes because the air conditioning tends to dehydrate your skin.

Carry two sets of your medications and the prescriptions that go with them. Put one set in your handbag and another in your suitcase so that you are never in a situation where you are stranded without your medication.

Make sure to carry your identification and medical history with you. You need to carry this on your person so that in the event of an emergency people can help you. Carry your doctor’s phone number, the phone numbers of relatives and at least one good friend and any other pertinent information that may help save your life.

The temptation to over indulge yourself while traveling is very strong but it is highly recommended that you control that urge! You want to enjoy your travels to the full extent without ending up in a hospital bed!

I’ll convey this knowledge to my aunt because the last time they went overseas her husband had heart problems and was admitted to a hospital. They really should keep records with them.
