Older Adults and Aerobics

October 21st, 2008 · No Comments

Welcome back!

According to recent studies, regular exercise can reverse age-related brain decline. The study revealed regular moderate exercise that makes a person breathless increases the speed and sharpness of thought, the actual volume of brain tissue, and the way in which the brain functions.

These benefits were noted both in people with Alzheimer’s and those showing no sign of the disease. “Some studies found that six months of aerobic exercise reversed age-related decline,” according to the report.

Now it is time to amp up our exercise activity from walking to a moderate amount of aerobic activity several times of week. Remember, increase your activity to the level where you become breathless and you will likely improve your cognitive and brain function. Not only that, but this type of activity can also “reverse the neural decay frequently observed in older adults.”

Time to head to the fitness center or dust off those aerobic tapes and DVD’s. This is good news for seniors and we need to take advantage of these findings.

What are you doing in the way of aerobic activity? Do you believe it helps your brain function? Will this information cause you to pick up the pace?
