National Start! Walking Day

April 8th, 2009 · No Comments

Welcome back!

The American Heart Association (AHA) has declared April 8 as National Start! Walking Day. They encourage everyone to grab their sneakers and walk 30 minutes today and every day.

In fact, the AHA has started a Start! Walking movement from April 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010. Their website has numerous aids and ideas to help everyone increase their exercise and walking regimen. Click on the link below for further information.

The AHA notes that walking is good for your heart, blood pressure, blood sugar, weight and sense of well-being.

Recent studies show that people who wear a pedometer increase their steps by 2,000 per day which is approximately one mile. Watching those numbers climb, and aiming for a goal of 10,000 to 12,000 steps is much more fun if you can keep track of your progress.

In fact, many see increasing their numbers as a game and are willing to “walk the extra mile” just to reach their particular goal. Although you can purchase a pedometer, some organizations such as AARP give them away for free. Some pharmacies have free pedometers at their checkout counter.

Check with the American Heart Association for more  ideas to increase your daily or weekly steps with the Start! Walking program. You can find a multitude of information and support on their website, including free tools to help you increase your walking time over the next year.

Grab a friend, coworker, or neighbor and become a healthier and more energetic you – no matter what your age.
