When I realized I was getting close to my 300th post on this site, I started thinking about words such as milestone and landmark. First I thought this post was a milestone, but, according to the dictionary milestones mark a distance between two points. Writing this many entries might be considered a milestone, but then I looked up landmark. Another conundrum as I originally thought a landmark was something solid placed in a position to mark some one’s property.
Then I read this definition of landmark: an event or development that marks a turning point or a stage.
How appropriate! When I began this website, I really had no idea what I was doing except that the topic should be elder care. Now, 300 posts later, I admit that I struggle at times coming up with something new to say. Some people say I shouldn’t write about personal issues as that will drive people away. Since I don’t have that big a following yet, I don’t worry about that. Others say this is a blog, not a website, and I can write anything of a personal nature I want, although I beg to differ with them.
For me, it’s a little bit of both – a blog where I sometimes feel free to express my personal opinions and share family information, especially in the area of health care and my role as caregiver to my father. At other times, it is a website providing timely information that will help caregivers and others as they move through their current season of caring for a loved one.
Call it what you will
Whatever you choose to call this site, I hope you call it useful. Hopefully, you will find articles that touch your heart or make you think. There are other articles that provide information you may need if you are caring for someone else. Another concern I have is being a support to those who are in the throes of care giving and on the edge of burnout. I would love to be a place where people can come and relax, read a bit, and maybe find something inspirational or humorous amongst the more heavy reading.
I don’t know how much longer I will continue posting – hopefully for some time to come – but, I know that day will arrive that either I will no longer have the desire to continue this topic or I will be unable to post due to age or infirmity. In the meantime, I don’t plan on going anywhere else very soon. Whether the articles are heavy or lighthearted, professional or personal, hopefully all of you will find something useful at the Elder Care Cafe, another landmark along the information highway.
