Hugging Grandma – Book Review

June 19th, 2009 · No Comments

Welcome back!

Zina Kramer’s mother had Alzheimer’s and her mother-in-law, dementia. She saw first hand how children and grandchildren were affected when their grandparent no longer acted the same.

That’s why Zina decided to write Hugging Grandma: Loving Those With Memory Disorders; with the hope the book would help children understand the changes they saw, and be able to help their grandparents.

The book begins with the fun activities Grandma Sylvia and her granddaughter shared. After a while, her granddaughter noticed how different Grandma Sylvia was acting.

When she mentioned to her mother how much Grandma had changed and how sad she was about it, her mother explained about the Alzheimer’s disease. She told her daughter how she could now help Grandma during her time of need.

Toward the end of the book, the author provides a  list of ways children can interact with their special grandparent. Also included is a suggested explanation parents can use as a model to help  their young children or grandchildren understand the disease.

Zina Kramer has written a heartwarming and timely book for children to help them understand the changes their grandparents are going through. Just as important is how parents can use the book as a tool to explain such a  difficult and sensitive subject.

Hugging Grandma is superbly written, and the beautiful illustrations by Dave Messing perfectly compliment the story. Young children who do not yet read can still easily follow the story through the colorful pictures.

Young children often have difficulty understanding the changes life brings. Hugging Grandma offers an illustrated explanation that will hopefully help them adjust to this very different, and special, grandparent.
