Elder Care: Body, Soul, and Spirit

February 1st, 2009 · No Comments

Welcome back!

This site highlights health care for the aging; personal care – mental, physical, and emotional – for those who care for the elderly; and issues that relate to the baby boomer generation now moving into their senior years.

As we move into the second month of our healthy lifestyle initiative, we are reminded of new beginnings and fresh starts. Whatever happened during the month of January, if it was good – celebrate, if it was not so good – let it go.

As we age, we face many challenges in our health, our finances, and how we proceed into the future. Unfortunately, the ills of the nation currently dominating the headlines especially affect our senior population.

Let us go into this second month of the year with a positive attitude. An attitude of gratitude for what we do have, and an expectation that by the end of the month we will have even more for which to be thankful.

As a firm believer in new beginnings, I encourage you to take a day at a time in whatever area you wish to maintain or to change. Let Monday be your new day and look forward to celebrating your accomplishments at the end of each week. Then at the end of the month, look back at all you have accomplished.

Set your goals for this week:

  • What are you going to do for your body this week? Will you begin or maintain your exercise regimen? Are you going to eat the foods that are necessary for a healthy body? Are you faithfully taking multivitamins or the required medications prescribed by your doctor?
  • For your soul – what will you do to relieve stress? What books will you read, walks or other breaks to relax, what meditations will you apply or learn? What support group will you visit to connect with others in the same or similar situation?
  • For your spiritual life – will you attend the church of your choice? What inspirational readings will help you in your life? Is there a Higher Power you can look to for answers and support?

February is a short month. You can use a calendar to jot your successes and take a look at the end of the month to see how successful you were.

A fun way to reward yourself is to use the inexpensive, fun stickers – stars, smiley faces, glittery shapes – each day to celebrate your success that day. It’s a fun way to quickly see your accomplishment day to day, or to realize when you need to step up the pace or get back into the race.

Whatever you do, don’t give up! Keep moving forward a step at a time.

Let us know how you are doing. Sharing your success will encourage others. We look forward to hearing from you!
