Daily Activities for Seniors

March 25th, 2011 · No Comments

Although some people believe that senior citizens are unable to tolerate physical or mental activities that is not the case. In fact, seniors of all ages are often eager for any activity that will stimulate their body or mind. Daily activities for seniors should be a top priority no matter how old they are.

Morning activities

Because they require less sleep than younger adults, they often awake early in the morning. After a healthy breakfast including fruit, grains, juice or coffee and plenty of water, they are often ready to participate in the day’s activities.

After an early morning shower, dressing in attire that will allow freedom of movement will allow them to participate in an exercise routine.

Physical exercises

Many senior citizens enjoy walking around their neighborhood, at the local track or indoors at a fitness center. Daily activities for seniors can also include such activities as an early round of golf, swimming at the local indoor pool, or attending a yoga class.

They should choose their preferred form of exercise so that they will more likely participate every day in spite of the aches and pains of old age. Even exercising for 20 to 40 minutes will make a huge difference in their overall physical well-being.

Healthy workout

Everyone who undertakes any type of exercise activity should always take a few minutes to warm up, and seniors are no exception. It is especially important that they take time to stretch their muscles before them beginning their walk, swim or other form of exercise.

Water is also an important component of a healthy workout. Seniors tend to become dehydrated much faster than younger adults especially on hot days. They should make sure they keep a bottle of water close at hand and take frequent sips.

If they experience any unexpected pain or feeling of discomfort, they should stop immediately to see if they can find the cause of the problem. A brief rest may be all they need before they continue.

Fun activities

There are a number of activities seniors can participate in to help them stay agile and to relieve any boredom from their less-active life. If they are unable to physically participate in an exercise program, they can participate in such activities as putting a puzzle together, performing needlework such as cross stitch or knitting, drawing or painting, or playing dominoes or cards with others.

Even a trip to a local store or mall will help them stay active and give them an opportunity to look at the goods on display. The walk will do them good and checking out what the stores carry will help keep them up-to-date with the times.

Daily activities for seniors do not mean they have to spend a lot of time exercising. Taking a few minutes several times a day to participate in some type of exercise routine or fun activity will help them stay limber and feel better about themselves.
