Caregiver Tips

September 13th, 2010 · No Comments

Anyone who has ever cared for another person knows it is not easy to be the one who is caring for someone else. Depending on the level of care necessary, care giving can be quite a challenge, mentally, physically, and emotionally, not to mention time consuming.  If you are a caregiver here are some tips to help make your care giving stint a little easier.

What is a Caregiver?

A caregiver is someone who, whether paid or unpaid, looks after another person who can no longer look after themselves due to illness, trauma, or old age. When a person is limited in what they can do, they need someone to step in and give them the care they need. There are millions of caregivers in the United States alone. If you are a caregiver, you have a great camaraderie around you.

Ways to Make the Task Easier

However you have come to be a caregiver, you already know that there is no rulebook that comes with the job. Each day is new and special and comes with its set of challenges. With these challenges in mind, here are a few tips to help you deal with the experience.

  1. Knowledge is power. Find out all you can about care giving and the resources available to you. Since you are not alone, there is plenty of information on the Internet, in magazines, and at local hospitals and nursing homes about the art of being a caregiver. Knowing what you are facing can help you prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.
  2. Line up a support system. If you are caring for a family member, you may not be the only one involved in seeing your loved one get better. Keep in contact with other family members so that you can coordinate your efforts on behalf of your loved one. If each person knows their role, there will be fewer reasons to stress out along the way and no one person bears the brunt of the entire responsibility.
  3. Get to know the medical professionals. If the reason you are a caregiver is because someone has sustained an injury or is no longer able to care for them self, get to know all about their condition from their physicians. You will know what to expect as far as medical changes and what to do when something happens. It is better to be prepared with more information you may need than to be surprised by what happens next.
  4. Involve to the person you are caring for. Many times we forget that the person we are caring for has information to share. We are taking care of them but that doesn’t mean that they are children and can’t participate in their own care. Ask them what they want and get them involved so that they don’t feel as if they are an invalid, of no importance, or a burden.

Care giving can be rewarding when you know what to expect and can find ways to deal with situations and problems.  There is a growing amount of information aimed at caregivers as our parents increase in age and the baby boomer generation moves into their senior years. Here are a couple of resources that may help you as a caregiver – both of these books, and many more, can be found at Amazon.com.
