Welcome back!
As diabetics soon find out, the importance of maintaining a proper blood sugar level is paramount to staying healthy as long as possible. Continuing the steps diabetics can take to insure proper blood sugar results must include planning.
Plan how to keep within the proper numbers by discussing strategies with the health care provider or diabetic nurse. Keep a log showing the blood sugar test results and take the log to each office visit for review.
What the numbers show may affect how much insulin to take or what the diabetic can have to eat. For example, when blood sugar is low, the diabetic nurse educator may tell them to eat or drink something that will bring their sugar back up to proper levels.
On the logbook, jot a note if something abnormal occurs, such as a missed meal, more exercise than usual, illness, or unusual schedule due to a vacation or social event.
Many times when diabetics step outside their normal routine, they can get into trouble with their blood sugar level moving outside the allowable range for them.
The A1C test and the glucose monitor results can keep a diabetic on track. They quickly learn to look at the numbers and know how to adjust their own insulin intake under a health care providers supervision.
Working closely with their health care provider, along with watching their numbers and adjusting their eating and insulin intake, will ensure a more stable blood sugar and provide more energy to enjoy their daily activities.
What steps have you or your loved one taken to stablize blood sugar levels? What worked for you, and what did not? Please feel free to leave a comment.
