Most of us know we should live a healthy lifestyle. After all, we are bombarded with information from a variety of directions such as print media, health-related television shows, radio advertising, in-store promos.
We are surrounded by health care information. Even my local Pharmacy provides complementary pamphlets and newsletters encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
Why then, are the majority of people around the world considered unhealthy?
- Do we receive so much incoming information that we block the truth?
- Do we believe that it is the other person who needs this information, not us?
- Are we sticking our collective heads in the sand, denying that we have a problem?
The reason could be any or all of the above. The truth is, most of us don’t follow the diet and exercise recommendations needed to live healthy active lives.
What should we do?
- Engage in physical activity on a regular basis
- Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegtables
- Actively work to maintain a healthy weight
Inactive? Start exercising.
Overweight? Follow a healthy eating plan whereby you can lose the extra pounds.
Our lack of diligence in the area of living a healthy lifestyle has produced an increase in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. All serious conditions that can shorten a persons life, not to mention add to the cost of health care and decrease the pleasure of living a satisfying life style.
Current estimates of medical costs related to physical inactivity and poor eating habits stand at $76 billion. It seems the more progressive our society becomes, the less we take care of our personal health.
Health care costs are astronomical and still rising. Obesity is on the rise in both men and women. The above named health conditions: diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cariovascular disease have increased over the last 18 years.
Researchers found there is a link between physical inactivity, smoking, and obesity, and depression and a lower quality of life.
We need to understand the importance of living a healthy lifestyle if we want to live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives.
