Hi! I am Edie Dykeman and welcome to the Elder Care Cafe. This website was created for caregivers, family members, and friends involved in elder care or those who wish to know more about the process of aging. A wide range of topics are discussed related to health care and aging as well as topics regarding the body, soul, and spirit. You will also find motivational, inspirational, and personal stories about my father and I.
My current day job(s)
After twenty-five years experience in the health care industry, my day job as a caregiver for my ninety-year-old father seemed the logical next step. I moved into his longtime home September 2006, the home he and Mom shared for thirty-two years until her death in 2004. In December 2009, we moved to a comfortable apartment just seven miles away, on the outskirts of Lansing, MI.
Towards the end of August 2010, we moved to Port Aransas, Texas on Mustang Island so that I could help care for my young grandson. Because my dad hated not living in Michigan, and proclaimed his displeasure outloud and often, my daughter and I decided to move back to Michigan a year later. We will remain in Michigan until dad passes away, then my daughter, her family and I will return to Mustang Island. Sounds like a lot of moving in just a few years – and it has been a challenge – but sometimes we go the extra mile for our aging parents.
Freelance writer, blogger, reviewer
In my spare time I am a freelance writer, Mystery Books Editor at BellaOnline, and webmaster/blogger of a growing number of websites – all the while working almost exclusively online. More recently, I have enjoyed creating niche websites and Squidoo lenses. I also review books, videos, and movies that have to do with elder care and aging for this site and Amazon.com.
Humor helps me deal with difficult situations. It sometimes shocks people who don’t understand, but I think most caregivers know we do what we need to do, to accomplish what we need to accomplish.
