Welcome back!
As we continue the good diabetic care checklist, it is important to remember each case is unique. Every diabetic has a different history and it is important that the medical team has documented evidence of important information at hand.
Each person should seek medical attention for individual needs rather than try to survive on information that may not apply to their particular situation.
Every Routine Checkup
- Check blood glucose levels. Take the logbook to the doctor’s appointment. Note whether blood sugar levels are too high or low.
- Check person’s weight. Ask how much they should weigh under these conditions. If not at ideal weight, what can they do to reach ideal weight?
- Blood pressure check. Is it less than 130/80? What is considered normal for them?
- Medication. Take a list of all medications including aspirin and herbs. Some physicians require the actual containers brought to the office. Discuss any problems. Do not be afraid to ask questions.
- Feet. Have checked or see a podiatrist for routine visits. The podiatrist will send a report of the visit to the physician.
- Physical activity. Develop a plan according to the physician’s guidelines.
- Meal plan. What should the diabetic eat or not eat. Follow the plan.
- Feelings. What is their emotional state? Are they depressed?
- Smokers. Develop a plan to help them quit. Do not be an enabler when smoking is hazardous to their health.
The lists I am providing are to give the caregiver a head start with what may be required on a regular basis.
Please feel free to add to the list in the comment section.
