Welcome back!
Continuing the series on keeping a checklist for good diabetic care, we will provide a list you can use on a daily basis. You may need to make adjustments for your particular situation, but this list will get you started.
Use the following list to help insure proper daily care:
Every Day
- Follow a healthy eating plan. Usually a plan under the direction of the doctor, dietitian, or diabetic nurse educator.
- At least 30 minutes of daily activity. Check with their physician regarding what type of exercise.
- Take medication as directed.
- Check blood glucose every day. Follow frequency and time of day provided by health care providers.
- Record time and blood sugar test results in a logbook. Contact physician or designate if blood sugar levels are too high or too low. Obtain further instructions, if necessary.
- Check feet for cuts, blisters, sores, swelling, redness, sore toenails.
- Brush and floss teeth daily, preferably brush after every meal.
- Do not smoke.
The last item is on the list to remind you and your loved one that smoking causes major problems for diabetics, even secondhand smoke.
You are welcome to add to the list pending your particular needs and concerns. Feel free to note your additions in the comment section.
